Barry Whittam 1941 – 2021

It’s with sadness we are writing our first post to announce the passing of our well loved member Barry .

Barry was a member at Great Lever & Farnworth Golf Club for 38 years. Days before he passed away Barry was made an honorary member by the club. Honorary membership has only been granted to a small number of members.

Barry said “It is with a full heart and the greatest thanks that I would love to accept the valued honorary membership. As a dedicated member, I can’t put into words how much this means to me. The Golf Club has been my life and soul and I wish for the Club to continue to prosper and thrive long after I am gone.”

It was also Barry’s wish to donate a sum of money towards a fountain on the 18th for all members and guests to enjoy for years to come. This has now been installed and we thank you Barry, it looks wonderful.

On the 15th May 2021 we will be holding the “Barry Whittam Cup”. On this day we can all raise a glass whilst looking out at the fountain to celebrate Barry’s 80th Birthday.

In Barry’s words, the club has been his life and soul. He was a very active member of the club. He volunteered on the Council, Greens Committee, donated our winter league boards, built many wooden items for the ladies Christmas Fayre and many many other things.

Barry’s funeral will be held on Tuesday 6th April 2021 but due to Covid its limited to family and friends . The cortege will proceed to the club where golf friends can pay their respects. The cortege will arrive at approximately 10.30 /10.35. Please try and leave the car park as free as possible for the cars to turn around.

Barry’s favourite colour was Royal Blue and his family have asked if we could honour Barry by wearing a handkerchief, scarf or tie etc in this colour. The past Captains of the club will be perform a guard of honour for Barry.

R.I.P Barry from all the members at Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Club
